This December 2nd will be a unique Cinema Extraordinaire – the Christmas Special!
Cinema Extraordinaire is a series of late afternoon Sundays that will focus on the exploration of extraordinary movie classics, accompanied by a phenomenal dinner and dessert by GOESTING of chef Florence Droogné.
Interesting subjects and themes are discussed in an aftertalk with film critic and art historians Claire Hoogakker, and Merel Coebergh who will go deeper into the material of life, technique, themes, background and zeitgeist that are getting touched upon in the movie. The introduction will be in English but the movie will be is screened with English subtitles.
For this Christmas Special we will screen one of the most beautiful movie classics ever made – ‘It’s a Wonderful Life” directed by Frank Capra. Capra is seen as the founder of the ‘romantic comedy’ genre and the ‘feelgood film’. He’s the director of classics such It Happened One Night (1934), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) ánd the maker of the classics.
Based on the short story and booklet The Greatest Gift written by Philip Van Doren Stern in 1939, It’s a Wonderful life (1947) swirls around the film stars James Stewart as George Bailey; a man who has given up his dreams in order to help others, and whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve brings about the intervention of his guardian angel. This angel shows George all the lives he has touched, and how different life in his community of Bedford Falls would be if he had never been born.
Enjoy this classic in pre-Christmas vibes at the Mayer Manor hearth accompanied by delicious dishes and authentic exchange – ingredients for a Wonderful Sunday.
