Extraordinary movies and dinner at Tenclub

Powered by Cinema Extraordinaire on behalf of Tenclub

Our intimate screening of the 20th of January will be the the Russian art film The Mirror. The story of a dying man of forty years old that remembers his past; his youth, his mother, the war, personal moments and things that tell shine a light on the recent history of life in Russia.

Andrei Tarkovksy (1932–1986) was a Russian filmmaker, writer, film editor, film theorist, theatre and opera director. His work is characterized by long takes, unconventional dramatic structure, distinctly authored use of cinematography, and spiritual and metaphysical themes.

The Mirror is loosely autobiographical, unconventionally structured, and incorporates poems composed and read by the director’s father, Arseny Tarkovsky. The work has grown in reputation since its release, and ranked nineteenth in Sight & Sound’s 2012 critics’ poll of the best films ever made, and ninth in the directors’ poll. It has also found favor with many Russians for whom it remains their most beloved of Tarkovsky’s works.

"[Art is] like a declaration of love: the consciousness of our dependence on each other. A confession. An unconscious act that none the less reflects the true meaning of life — love and sacrifice"
